Box 1 Gold

Box 1 Gold is targeted at racing greyhounds and seems to be popular in the community.

At approx. $40 for an 18kg bag it’s very cheap, but you get what you pay for. The food is primarily wheat, the number 1 problematic grain in dog foods. It’s a common allergen, more often than not because it typically contains mites, and it provides little nutrition. It’s used in dog food for one reason only, and that’s because it’s cheap.

The second ingredient is sorghum, another cheap filler. Dog’s are essentially carnivores, so these main ingredients are completely against canine nutrition 101 and will likely lead to health issues in later years.

We find meat and meat by-products in the 3rd spot, the cheapest inclusion of meat and meat-related “stuff”. The composition of wheat and sorghum before meat qualifies this as a resounding 1 star food.

I’ll run through a few of the other ingredients:

Tallow and Digest are by-products of meat rendering, the first is a fatty substance the second a liquid broth used to add flavour to an otherwise bland food. Wheat bran is harsh on digestion (and in any case we already have too much wheat in the food as it is). Soybeans are another culprit for allergies.

As a whole this is a poor quality food. A greyhound will burn off the carbs from the wheat and sorghum, but there’s little in the food to aid muscle mass, development, joint health, or overall health.

Where to buy Box Gold

Good points…

It’s cheap.

Bad points…

  1. Saw this stuff earlier today in large bulk boxes at a pet supply outlet. Curiously the written material on the box claims that it’s not only for greyhounds but show dogs as well. I don’t know what goes on in the head of a show judge, but it seems that it would be a very special dog indeed that would be in peak condition on a diet of this crap.
