Zealandia Dog Food Review

Country of originNew Zealand
Available fromPet Circle

Zealandia dog food hails from New Zealand, a country known for top-notch pet foods. Zealandia only comes as wet food (deluxe pâté if you will), and it’s so similar to ZIWIPeak you’d be hard pushed to tell the difference.

Oh, and at the time of writing it’s cheaper than ZIWIPeak!

For our Zealandia review we’ll take a look at the Chicken Pâté recipe, but there’s a range of interesting flavours in the range like Goat, Venison, and Duck.

What the marketing says

According to their website, Zealandia is the 8th continent, the purest on Earth, with deep blue seas, fertile land, and clean fresh air!

Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? And it’s actually real!

I think we should all move there…

Truth is, Zealandia pet food hails from Gisborne, New Zealand, an area known for it’s wineries and surf beaches. Perhaps it can be known for it’s quality pet foods too.

Zealandia Dog Food Review

Zealandia claim to “responsibly source ethical and sustainable ingredients of the highest quality” with “superfoods from the sea” such as salmon oil and green-lipped mussels. Sounds good ✔️

Some key points I found on the Zealandia website for the Chicken pâté are the use of free-run chicken free from growth hormones and antibiotics. This looks to be the case across the range, as well as the salmon being sustainably farmed.

Great stuff!

Let’s take a look at the labelling of Zealandia dog food and see what the ingredients really say…

What the ingredients really say

Zealandia Chicken Pâté (like the other recipes) is around 93% meat & organs, which is absolutely fantastic when you consider a dog to be carnivorous, or at the least an omnivore with a prey-bias. 93% is really good, and I dare you to compare that to what’s in some of the supermarket brands full of rubbish made to look like meat.

The ingredients of Zealandia dog foods are nigh on flawless. The main ingredient in all pâtés is a muscle meat such as deboned chicken. This is the main constituent and mimics a raw dog food diet, so we’re on the right track.

Next up we have a range of lamb organs – lamb liver, lamb lung, lamb green tripe, lamb heart, and lamb kidney. It’s great to see Zealandia mimicking what is essentially a true canine diet, and this will reap rewards in terms of the health of your dog.

It may seem unusual to have a chicken formula full of lamb organs, but that should only concern you if your dog has an intolerance to lamb – very unlikely.

Many wet dog foods use a formula which is mostly rubbish with the vitamins and minerals usually sourced from animal ingredients added as a supplement. In other words, a fake canine diet.

Zealandia Dog Food Review

The good stuff doesn’t stop there with Zealandia dog food. Even the smaller inclusions are worth raving about.

Green mussels (often called green-lipped mussels) are a wonderful addition to a dog’s diet as they’re rich in ETA and DHA fatty acids (omega 3’s). This will really support health and wellbeing, lead to better joint health, and a shinier coat. Green lipped mussels are a trait of many New Zealand dog foods including ZIWI Peak and K9 Natural.

Even the choice of oil – salmon oil – is top notch.

Credit where credit’s due, Zealandia have cranked out a great dog food.

Highly recommended! Add some to your dog’s diet right now!

  1. zealandia is not human grade…
it still rates higher than foods that aRe human grade
when my sister wrote & asked if they were human grade, the response was
“Our products are made from by-products of the human-food chain. We do not process any animal specifically for pet food.”
english isnt my first language – can someone translate what this word salad means please? and also – does this still then rate higher than peer foods which are human grade? cheers

    • Hi Chris, no ingredient is human grade once it hits a pet food manufacturing facility, so there’s various interpretations. Better to have animal products from a human grade abattoir than a pet grade knackery, so usually when a pet food company says “uses human grade ingredients” then you would hope the former…. that’s assuming all ingredients are in fact human grade, not just one or two.

  2. I found this review really helpful and it prompted me to start buying the range for our English Staffy puppy as we were looking for a pate style dog food to complement his Scratch kibble.

He eats a third of a can each day (placed inside two kongs and frozen) and the little boy loves it. He enjoys all the varieties we’ve given him so far with the duck possibly being his favourite. He’s in good health and produces good stools which makes life easier for everyone involved. Would highly recommend.

  3. The best canned food I’ve ever bought. My dog has severe allergies to beef, chicken and some preservatives and reacts to every canned food I’ve tried so I was stuck cooking her game meat every night. I saw this online and slowly introduced it over a week, no reaction at all and looks fantastic. She loves it. I stick to venison, goat and duck and she’s eating more now than she ever has. Highly recommended.

  4. First attempt at wet food for our 2.5 yr old GSP after reading your review & he’s lovin’ the lamb pate immediately!
On opening the can,you smell the freshness of the ingredients and even the green lipped mussel aroma, he leaves nothing in his bowl after all meals. We originally purchased 12 from pet circle but purchased another 12 this week after him doing so well on Zealandia! Will try venison next..
    Quality ingredients , highly recommend!!!
