Before delving into this high protein/high fat/low carb performance dog food, it’s worth noting the nutritionist behind the range is the same guy who originally formulated Meals for Mutts and later LifeWise. His long-standing research of canine nutrition and reputable history puts Performadog in good stead. It’s also worth noting the Performadog website contains a wealth of transparent information relating to pet food and pet food manufacture, which vastly differs from other retailer websites designed to promote (and mislead).

Let’s take a look at the grain free Turkey formula. It boasts 32% protein, 22% fat, and (by our estimates) a low 28.5% carbs, which is a really good start.

The first ingredient in the Turkey formula is what we should expect – turkey. This, combined with poultry oil (a source of unsaturated fats/fatty acids), and lamb will comprise the main constituents of the food. It’s not often we see such a good start to an ingredients list.

Next we have the remaining significant ingredients, a combination of peas, chickpeas, lentils, and sweep lupins. Each of these has nutritional merit, and it’s nice to see a balance of legumes instead of just “peas”.

The list of quality ingredients doesn’t stop there. Egg is included as an excellent (eggcellent?) complete protein source. Carrots, spinach, parsley, kelp… it all sounds very healthy. To top it off the food is preserved naturally, not chemically, with vitamin E and rosemary oil.

I find this food hard to fault. The ingredients and composition are well considered. It’s designed for performance dogs, but I see no reason why you wouldn’t feed this to a lazy dog – chances are the dog will become less lazy on this food.
