ZiwiPeak from New Zealand make a rather unique “air-dried” dog food, more in keeping with a raw diet than a dry kibble diet. When a normal kibble is cooked some of the nutrients are lost in the process, which won’t be the case with ZiwiPeak.
I’ll focus on the Venison and Fish recipe for this review, but all recipes seem very similar on ingredients and guaranteed analysis. I calculate a minimum of 93% meat and fish content in this food which is astounding. The remaining ingredients are vitamins and minerals, with absolutely no grains or fillers.
Venison is a great lean meat, being lower in calories and fat than beef and chicken, and it’s rich in essential amino acids necessary for overall health. It’s worth pointing out that “meat” is non-descriptive so this will contain muscle tissue and other off-cuts, so a lower quality of meat that what we’d buy for ourselves in the supermarket. Ground bone is included as a great source of calcium.
Hoki Fish is a nice inclusion sourced readily in New Zealand, providing highly digestible protein as well as omega-3. Next up we find a range of Venison organs, including lungs, hearts, and kidneys which are rich in protein and essential minerals, and tripe which is something dogs tend to love. We also find liver which is very rich in nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.
Green-lipped Mussels are another tell-tale sign that this food comes from New Zealand. It’s a great addition, being yet another source of omega fats for a healthy skin and coat as well as a proven anti-inflammatory for joint health.
The minerals in the food are chelated which is a good sign of a high-end product. Chelated minerals are chemically attached to protein to make them easier to digest.
This is a convenient alternative for those who wish to feed raw but simply don’t have the time. It’s more expensive than other dog foods ($40+ for a kilo bag is a lot), but you’re buying a food which is over and above your average kibble. It’s mostly meat which is much more expensive than the fillers we find in other foods, which somewhat justifies the high price.
Recommended if you have the money.
