Long story short, LifeWise dog food is formulated and manufactured by the original formulator of regarded brand Meals for Mutts, and the original LifeWise formulas come highly rated on Pet Food Reviews. In our LifeWise BIOTIC dog food review we’ll see why this range of special needs dog foods could well be a healthier alternative to Hill’s Science Diet and Hill’s Prescription Diet.

A short overview of special needs foods

Historically vet recommended diets for special conditions and special needs foods have been monopolised worldwide by two key players – Mars, makers of Royal Canin, and Colgate-Palmolive, makers of Hill’s Science & Prescription Diets. If you read our reviews for these highly endorsed products you will find they are very negative, for the simple reason they are formulated largely of grains such as corn or wheat. We find these brands often contain supplements or tailoring to address specific conditions, but in our opinion do not address the long term health or nutritional requirements of your pet dog.

Unfortunately due to the significant clout of these major conglomerates, combined with huge marketing funds and integration with Universities and the veterinary industry, there is almost no room for independent manufacturers who can potentially offer healthier alternatives. LifeWise BIOTIC, however, provides an alternative to these big brands, so continue with our LifeWise BIOTIC dog food review to see what this independent Australian brand has to offer.

LifeWise BIOTIC Dog Food Review

There are currently six offerings in the LifeWise BIOTIC dog food range. These are as follows:

For the purpose of this review we’ll take a deeper look at the LifeWise BIOTIC Joint formula, but note the other formulas in the range are relatively equal as recommended for their specific special need condition.

LifeWise BIOTIC Dog Food Review

We find the main ingredients a combination of lamb and lamb fat, oat groats, and rice. The protein of 20% is on the low side, and 12% fat is moderate, and we estimate around around 50% carbohydrates. Although these don’t offer a glowing guaranteed analysis we will overlook them for now and push on with the review.

If we assess LifeWise BIOTIC in terms of competitor brands Royal Canin and Hills, oats are a quality grain inclusion compared to excessive maize (corn) or cereal (wheat) commonly found in these rival brands respectively. Rice is also a better inclusion in these terms, but we must note the significant amount of grain in this range, which is further clarified by the guaranteed analysis.

Lamb and lamb fat is a really good inclusion, and given the carnivorous nature of your pet dog this is a very beneficial ingredient. Poultry oil as another animal ingredient will also provide nutritious merit as part of the 12% fat.

Further down the ingredients we begin to discover how LifeWise BIOTIC has been tailored to help your dog with their specific condition, in this case joint health. We find a range of inclusions in this respect – omega 3 6 9 oil blend, glucosamine, and chondroitin, alongside a range of carefully considered inclusions, will really serve to benefit not only your dog’s specific condition, but their general health and wellbeing as well.

Keeping the amount of grain in mind, we would recommend LifeWise BIOTIC over other prominent special needs and prescription diets. You may also be inclined to use LifeWise BIOTIC as a base diet and choose to supplement it with condition-specific fresh ingredients, which in the instance of a joint diet may include fish, coconut oil, or fresh meats and organs in general.

LifeWise BIOTIC Dog Food Review

There are no nasty ingredients used in LifeWise BIOTIC, and the food is preserved naturally. If your dog has a specific condition then LifeWise BIOTIC is worthy of consideration, or if they don’t have a specific condition refer to the original LifeWise dog food review.
