Hypro Premium Dog Food Review
You may not have heard of Hypro Premium, but you’ve probably heard of Meals for Mutts – an Australian brand with a very loyal following. Hypro Petfoods have been the manufacturers behind Meals for Mutts for a couple of years now, and this is their straight-from-the-manufacturer offering.
We’ll take a look at the Chicken & Duck formula for the purpose of this review. The other formulas use the same base ingredients so are comparable, just with a different meat.
The main ingredient is what we would hope to see – meat. In this case it’s chicken and duck meat. The Aussie regs definition of meat is, in summary, “any part of the animal other than the feathers which contains protein” and ordinarily “used as a food by dogs or cats”. That means inclusive of offal (which is a good thing), but also offers the manufacturer leniency as to what the ingredient is comprised of.
We can expect the 2nd and 3rd ingredients to be prominent, a combination of faba beans (broad beans) and chickpeas. These legume constituents will likely outweigh the meat ingredient in the top spot and signifcantly contribute to the protein and carbs (chickpeas and high in legume protein and carbs). Almost all kibbles use similar ingredients (grain or grain free) to bulk up the food. The 4th ingredient is a combination of vegetables, inclusive of potato, carrot, and spinach, with no real indication of which of those ingredients is the most prominent.
The protein is 26%, which puts the food above many household brands. The 15% fat is reasonable. They list the carbs as 30% which is a definite positive considering many brands (including scientific/premium brands) are much higher in carbs.
It’s nice to see no use of artificial colours, preservatives, or antioxidants in the product. It’s very similar to Meals for Mutts, so if that’s worked for you then this would too.
Overall it’s a decent food. Better than many.
