Billy + Margot Dog Food Review

Billy + Margot is one of the many Real Pet Food Company brands. They’re a huge Australian manufacturer who make many commercial and home brands, of which this and Ivory Coat are two of their more premium products. It’s worth noting the warning on the Ivory Coat review in regard to the number of reports we’ve had of sickness on Ivory Coat and other Real Pet Food Co brands (Woolworths Baxters is another).

For this review we’ll look at the Chicken & Duck formula…

We find chicken meal and duck meal as the top two ingredients which is really good to see. Compare this to most supermarket brands and this food is leaps ahead. Meat in meal form is protein-dense as the moisture has been removed, so we’re assured these ingredients will remain prominent in the food once it’s cooked.

The next three ingredients are red lentilspeas, and chickpea flour. Although these all have nutritional merit, they will also significantly contribute to the protein in the food. It’s likely the bulk of the protein will come from these ingredients, more than the meat, which makes it more of a plant-based food. These ingredients are cost-effective, but dogs digest meat proteins much more efficiently. Pea protein as the 7th ingredient further solidifies this as plant-based.

It’s nice to see sweet potato as a source of carbohydrates and also to bind the food together. It’s low GI compared to potato, and it’s better to see than tapioca (becoming common in grain free foods).

There’s some excellent inclusions in this food. There’s a lot to mention so I’ll be brief.

Chelated minerals are more expensive inclusions than we commonly find, and they’re more expensive because they’re better quality. It’s a sign of a quality product.

We have a range of oilsflaxseed, and the wonderful coconut oil. These are great for health, joints, skin, and coat. Way down the list we find manuka honey which offers anti-bacterial qualities, and another sign of a good product. We find select fruits and veggies as well.

This may verge of being plant-based, but it’s also very well-considered with many plus points. It’s well into the 4 star range and I would happily feed this to my dogs.

8 Total Score
One of the better brands from Australian manufacturer Real Petfood Co.

PROS
  • Very well thought out food with so many plus points.
CONS
  • We need to account for legumes being the largest contingent of protein, but it's still very good.

  1. I’ve just started my pocket bully on this. He’s had soft stool and diarrhoea on lifewise, and royal canin ID. The only thing that seems to firm his stool up is our old dogs advance, which I suspect was the salmon recipe. Looking forward to seeing results, the ingredients list looks solid / trying the salmon & superfoods

  2. Previously had my dog on a few different highly rated foods, but she seemed to be getting bad breath. She had been unwell (unrelated to this symptom) and was treated by the vet, but the breath smell stayed. Switched recently to this food and her breath is completely different and much more pleasant- only thing I changed is the food. Very happy with the single protein salmon, just wish it came in even bigger bags! 🙂

  3. It’s probably worth noting that this brand has been a product of the Real Pet Food Co. since 2016 though they appear to have retained in some fashion the woman who founded it, where she performs some sort of PR/smiling face role for them. On a recent visit here she did a number of appearances at pet food suppliers, where it was disappointing to see people leaving with the impression that this is a scrappy alternative business producing a low quantity/high quality product as opposed to all those other nasty corporate giants.

  4. I could see people buying this food for the bag it’s gorgeous haha, it looks really really good, I’ll have to check it out one day as I’m sure I’ll have to go to Petbarn for something.

  5. One point in their favour is that this manufacturer is also offering three distinct single protein versions of this food (well technically it’s a single animal protein + the plant proteins discussed above) which might be helpful for people trying to solve an allergy issue.
