Nood Dog Food Review

WebsiteNood Australia
Available fromColes, Woolworths

For our Nood dog food review we’ll take a look at the dry formula Cage-Free Chicken Recipe with Superfoods for Dogs. They also have a chicken formula for puppies, and a salmon formula for adult dogs, both being similar to the one we’ll look at today.

Only weeks after Nood was released, and shortly after we wrote a glowing review, the product discreetly changed. Manufacture switched from USA to Thailand, and the ingredients swayed from decent ingredients to not so decent ones like rice and tapioca. It’s a shame as the original was a very promising product readily available in supermarkets like Coles.

Nood Dog Food Review

On the Nood Australia website we find the following claims:

  • Real Meat 1st Ingredient
  • Transparent Recipes
  • Formulated by Vets & Nutritionists

In addition to the above, they make the claim the food is “Premium”, made by pet lovers, for pet lovers.

This is all marketing spiel. “Premium” isn’t a regulated word and can be used for anything. “Real Meat” is a term I always laugh at, as if it wasn’t real meat it would be fake meat, and I don’t really know what that means. Quorn, perhaps?

Nood Dog Food Review

The first two ingredients are both chicken (a combo of chicken + poultry meal). It’s a good start and ensures a decent amount of meat in the food, unlike other supermarket brands. The 2nd and 3rd ingredients are possibly in equal proportion, being a combination of rice and tapioca. This is a shame in respect to the previous formula which had legumes and sweet potato, but it’s pretty standard for a dog food to contain as much cheaper ingredients as possible. There are worse alternatives to rice and tapioca, and it’s good to see they haven’t opted for nasties like wheat or cereal/cereal by-products.

We expect the amount of chicken and poultry to equal the rice and tapioca, which is also suggested by the guaranteed analysis. The protein of 26% is respectable. 12% fat is moderate, and we estimate 44% carbs which is slightly better than average.

The 5th and 6th ingredients are similar – chicken fat and digested animal protein (which I assume is what used to be referred to as animal digest which has a bad name from being a little gruesome).

We find some nice inclusions such as salmon oil, some token mixed berries, green peas and other veggies, and decent selections of natural preservatives and antioxidant.

Nood Dog Food Review

For a supermarket brand Nood dog food is pretty good, especially considering the affordability. Why not mix it up with some fresh meats, organs, and eggs from the adjoining aisles?

Nood dog food review summary

Nood dog food still holds it’s own amongst supermarket brands, even with the slightly diminished Nood version 2. Compared to some of the rubbish we find on the supermarket shelves this makes Nood one of the best supermarket dog foods you can buy.

Consumer feedback has been pretty good with no major issues (read consumer comments below). If Coles is your regular haunt then Nood dog food is worth trying.

  1. My dog was sick as a parrot eating Nood.
Its manufactured on a line that does cleaning products in Asia I think
Warning for all dog lovers to avoid it

  2. I have just brought both dog and cat food In this brand. My dog is a tiny fine little Chihuahua who will never be fat no matter how much she eats but she can be fussy and has a fast metabolism according to the vet but with this food she looks amazing! Her stools are solid and her breath doesn’t smell as much anymore. She still gets other things so it seems a good balance. As for my cat I rescued him and he loves this food. When I got him he was on fancy feast and had the WORST gas ever! Never have I ever smelt or heard a cat fart so much. Lol. Soon as I changed him he’s beed doing amazing although I have had to cut him back as he has 3 legs and gaining a bit to much weight but that’s my fault as he’s a typical cat begging for food and I give in. Haha. But his stools look great and he gets fed wet food morning and night so his deits a bit more balanced. Still looking for a better cheap option but am still doing research on the cat food.

  3. My cat was happily eating this nood dry food for months then all of a sudden the last packet I got she refused to eat it. She would opt to go hungry than have it so after a couple of days I went and got different food for her. I complained to Nood. They said there must be something wrong with my cat and I should take her to the vet.

  4. I bought the Noods food for my Great Dane.. needless to say its the same size pellet as the cat food and chokes the dog as she tries to eat it. Maybe a couple of sizes.. My dog manages to eat every other brand but this is way to small. Not every dog is a teacup variety

  5. Well I’m sorry, I will not buy any dog food from another country….so time to change it up..
Probably start making my own dog food..
    That’s safer…

  6. Nood cage free chicken probably caused itchiness in my whippet, at least she never scratched before while on Blackhawk or Farmer’s Market and has stopped scratching now that she is back on Farmer’s Market (Coles’ supply situation with dog food SUCKS)

  7. My Westie has just tried Nood and ate the portion I gave her, she did have a good drink after, but she seems quite happy. After the debarkle of Ivory Coat it is so hard to know what’s Ok and what’s not. I guess I’d be a bit happier if Omega 3 and 6
were included wondering about the salt content as well not happy about the Tapioca either. I cook all her wet food and that works all is good quality stuff as I think it is. I wonder why they don’t do a grain free but that’s probably the rice and Tapioca they use I believe a small amount of brown rice is Ok.
Maybe a Tbone steak and Vegies is the answer, just tired of reading ingrediencies.

  8. Wet puppy food.

The food Is not bad…. however!!! Company is very cheeky changing labels of their packaging from puppy to general dog and puppy in one ( was there no difference at all?)
I bought once the new labeled wet food package and food was softer ( more watery like) when squished there was 1 inch less then usually! ( I had previous puppy pouch to compare. Both state 100g !

  9. My dog does better on Nood chicken than on Big Country Raw or Natural Balance limited ingredient chicken. No constipation or diarrhea anymore. He was on raw for 6 years and it was just not working for him anymore with chronic constipation. Vet said he was healthy otherwise. Dog’s stools were better but never stabilized on Natural Balance (kibble). Nood he poops like a normal dog again. There’s more carbs yes, but also more fiber and probiotics in this one, which seems to do well for him.

    • After trying all sorts of cheap to eye-wateringly expensive kibbles, wet foods, air-dried and freeze-dried raws, pre-made raw patties, DIY raw with VAN, and Prime100 rolls, Nood has been the one thing, other than Hills, that actually results in nice, solid poops and anal glands that don’t express multiple times’ per day on everything. While we still do include all the other things as regular components of the diet, Nood has been a life-saver!

I do just wish it was still available to purchase on Nood’s website rather than having to schlep to Coles all the time since buying multiple bags ends up quite heavy and some of the formulas are always gone from the shelves unless you don’t work and can get there early enough in the morning…

  10. This food is garbage, do not feed to your pets, the salmon version is basically low grade fishmeal for small fish, not for higher chain level carnivores. They cannot even list the ingredients most to least. Do not trust it.

  11. My cat won’t touch Nood cat biscuits! That’s something this review seem to have missed – sure the ingredients are okay – but as others have mentioned pets HATE nood!

    • That’s not what reviews on this site or any site including dog food advisor are about. These reviews are based on ingredients only, to show the consumer if a food is worth it’s cost or not.

Since no food is perfect for every dog or cat, even buying the best rated food, doesn’t mean anything, if your pet hates it or reacts to it.

I typically know what you mean by the basis of reviews, but this is more of an overview of ingredients than reviews. I kinda think in a way he could rename himself haha. Most of these foods he doesn’t actually even try.

I’ve seen a few Noods in trolley’s and it isn’t full on the shelves here, so people are buying it.

Honestly the only food I want on the shelves is Open Paddock. I think their having stock driver issues. Because the food came out last month and only a handful of stores have it.

  12. Nood dog food is made in Thailand, buy Australian dog food like Farmers Market instead.

  13. My cat spewed both times I fed him this.

    • Also my cats are not impressed with the Nood dry cat kibble. They tried it but won’t eat it any more. Even the dog refuses to eat the dry cat Kibble. Waste of money. Will not be buying it again

  14. I was using Nood for about 4 months after problems with other grain free foods for my Boston and Frenchy. Everything was fine until about a month ago. Nood now gives both dogs very loose stools and I have had to change to a different product.
I didn’t realise the manufacturing had changed to Thailand (i had not read the packaging since my early purchase which said made in US) but should have realised as the smell was different.
Unfortunately I would not recommend the current Nood (Thailand made) kibble in either flavouring..

    • I’ve been feeding my large breed pup (5 months old) this food and he’s having diarrhea also. I didn’t know about the change in manufacturing and ingredients. Good to know. So what did you find that your dog could eat? There are so many choices. Thanks.

    • Not only that but they changed the ingredients as well.
