Black Hawk became a huge success as an Australian pet food company offering a better standard of pet food than many leading commercial brands. They’re now owned by New Zealand company Masterpet (EBOS Group) but the product is still manufactured in Australia.

They have a good market position being more affordable than other top brands, yet have ingredients that far surpass most dog foods you’ll find in the supermarket.

We’ll take a look at the Lamb & Rice formula for this review seeing as it has the best composition of the range (higher protein and fat, lower carbohydrates).

Lamb is the top ingredient, and as it’s “lamb meal” we know we have a solid animal protein source and what I expect from a decent food. This is backed up with Chicken Meal and Fish Meal to offer your dog a variety of protein sources. I would prefer to see a less ambiguous fish ingredient as it’s hard to ascertain what this is, but we can hope this is rich in omega fats and oils typical of fish ingredients. Other premium fish-based foods list the specific type of fish, such as salmon.

Rice is a cheap inclusion in pet foods but is easily digested. Brown rice (which this food used to contain) would be a more nutritious choice. We also find Oats in the food which are a great choice of grain, being a source of fibre and slow-burning energy.

Chicken fat is a source of omega-6 as well as a source of energy. The remainder of the food shows a variety of nice inclusions – various oils, glucosamine, and chondroitin, all good for health and joints, plus additives for calcium and a range of fruits, veggies, and necessary vitamins, and minerals.

This certainly isn’t a bad food as it has some well chosen ingredients, but customer feedback has shown a number of dogs suffer digestive upsets with this food (read the comments). Please take that into account when feeding this food, and perhaps add it to a rotational diet to offer your dog some variety.
