If Petbarn (or City Farmers) is your pet store of choice, then you’re probably wondering how good Providore is (especially given the price tag $$$).

The food boasts a whopping 93% meat which is really good to see. It’s similar to the wonderful ZiwiPeak in many ways, but falls slightly short due to the peas and vegetable glycerin as the 3rd and 4th ingredients.

Keeping in trend with other New Zealand pet foods it contains green-lipped mussels which are a fantastic source of omegas, chondroitin, and glucosamine for joint health and overall well being (plus a glossy coat).

Being air dried, the food will retain much more nutrients than any kibble baked at high temperatures. This makes for a very species-appropriate diet.

It’s complete with organs and bones, all rich in the right nutrients. Even the ingredients lower down the list are good – parsley, chicory, kelp, flaxseed, and fish oil. There’s lots of good about the food.

So is it expensive?

Well, yes, especially if you have big hungry dogs. I know if I fed this consistently to my two Border Collies I’d be bankrupt by Christmas. This is the reason why these foods are often advertised as a complete diet or a topper. Simply adding this to a diet, or rotation, or even as a treat, will certainly boost the health of your dog. If you have a small dog, or a ferret for that matter, then this may well be a viable option.

Another way of looking at it – is this food really expensive, or are other brands really cheap because they’re made with stuff your dog doesn’t need?

It’s a good food. I don’t think it’s quite on par with rival ZiwiPeak, but it’s far better than most.
