Pro Pac Ultimates is a US food imported to our shores and sold at Pet Circle. They’re a small manufacturer and produce food at their own factory, which differs from bigger brands who have foods produced in large factories along with other manufacturers. They source all the ingredients themselves, so we would hope they’re of a decent quality.

The grain free range has three recipes Heartland Choice (Chicken & Potato), Bayside Select (Whitefish & Potato), and Meadow Prime (Lamb & Potato). Let’s take a look at the chicken recipe, and consider the others on par. They also have grain recipes available.

The first ingredient is chicken meal, a protein-dense meat ingredient. That’s great to see, and how a dog food should be. They’ve had the decency to tell us the percentage of this ingredient in the food, which stands at 20% minimum. I wish all manufacturers were this transparent but sadly they’re not. The only other animal-based ingredient in the food is chicken fat as the 5th ingredient, so this food is approximately 1 fifth meat to 4 fifths other stuff.

Potato as the second ingredient (listed at 19%) is the main carbohydrate and also used to bind the kibble. It’s not the best carb source, with sweet potato being a better low-GI option.

The 3rd and 4th ingredients are peas and chickpeas, which will add fibre but also protein to the food. What that means is the moderate 24% protein in the food will largely come from these two ingredients. It’s possible, and likely, that these ingredients combined amount to almost 40% of the food. Dogs are by nature carnivores and digest meat proteins more efficiently than vegetable proteins.

There’s a range of fruits and veggies in the food which is always nice to see, as well as egg and flaxseed as great additions.

Looking at the composition as a whole the protein level is moderate (a mixture of meat and vegetable proteins). The fat content is on the low side, testament to the food being 20% meat.
