Phoenix Dog Food Review

Country of originAustralia

For our Phoenix dog food review we’ll use the Turkey, Duck & Chicken formula as a benchmark. There are four varieties in the range, all being grain free and non-GMO.

It’s worth noting the other three formulas – Ocean Fish & Barramundi, Kangaroo, and Goat & Lamb – are all hypoallergenic meat proteins, so opt for those if your dog has a chicken allergy. Otherwise consider all formulas on par.

What the marketing says

The slogan for Phoenix dog food is “Nourish for a Better Life”. They state the foods are grain free and non-GMO. On the Turkey, Duck & Chicken formula they state it promotes dental health, so we’ll take a look at the reason why a bit later. The products, like almost all pet foods these days, are labelled “premium”, whatever that means.

What the labelling really says

Phoenix Dog Food Review

From looking at the ingredients it’s possible the first seven are equal proportions, with the meats listed first to make the food more appealing to the consumer. That said it’s great to see four of these are animal ingredients. We have three meat meals – turkey meal, duck meal, and chicken meal – to really ensure a decent amount of meat protein. We find poultry fat which will make up the majority of the very respectable 18% fat content.

All formulas have a really decent protein of 32%. That sits high above the average of around 22%, and combined with 18% fat that makes Phoenix dog foods lower in carbs and sugars than most. Great stuff.

Beans and chickpeas are decent inclusions, and far better than ramming the formula full of cereals or corn which we find in super-expensive “science” diets.

Within the more minor ingredients further down the list we find some noteworthy inclusions such as marine fish oil and coconut oil. These are great to see and should help joint health and wellbeing. We also find apple, kale, kelp, carrot, and added prebiotics for gut health. Anti-carcinogenic turmeric is included in a small amount, and it’s great to see Phoenix dog food is preserved naturally with mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract

They’ve added a small amount of SMHP (sodium hexametaphosphate) to all formulas, which can soften and reduce tartar. It’s found in some toothpastes, and not recommended in large quantities which it won’t be with this food, but be wary of combining it with dental treats. We spit out toothpastes, which isn’t the case when these ingredients are included in dog foods and treats.

  1. Pros:
    – Dogs like it, pleasant smell (only used goat&lamb and turkey, duck&chicken)
    – Active dogs keep weight on well
    Cons:
    – Price is quite high compared to some other brands with better ingredients (Orijen and Acana for example).
    – Amount of poop after dogs being on this food!!! We feed our dogs (two border collies) according the provided feeding chart, but ended up reducing the food amount as there were so much soft texture poop to pick up. Unfortunately reducing food amount did not change the end result.

Also worth mentioning that our dogs are healthy young adults with no food allergies or special food requirements. After trialling three sacks have decided to change to other food.

Thank you for your review – always appreciated, and it’s always good to hear how people have got on with a food.

  2. Purchased Phoenix primarily due to the review here, was mainly rotating wellness core, Open Farm and Nutrience for our GSP. Happy to say he’s thriving on the turkey/duck and chicken kibble. No issues, poop is always the same, coat seems softer, kibble smells divine and the 32 percent protein with 18 fat is a good mix for him with his endless energy!
Purchased another 13kg bag for $129 yesterday, good pricing compared to some bigger names that have really hacked up their prices of late on some websites!
    Highly recommended

  3. I have just been using a trial pack for transferring my dog onto this product I am finding he really loves it & looks forward to having this product He searches for any chance of me dropping some onto the floor when I spoon into his bowl Wookie is a genuine lover of this product
