Vitality – Advanced Pet Care

Firstly this is not, and has no affiliation with, the well known manufacturer Advance (MARS Petcare). Actually I don’t know how the company hasn’t been sued. Advanced produce a number of brands (Vitality, Dog Krunchies, Mal-E-Bites, AusDog, Buffet Kennel Mix) at their location in Naval Base, Western Australia. They were brought to my attention when a reader’s dog was fed one of their foods by a kennel, which led to her dog becoming very sick.

Let’s take a look at the Vitality Classic formula, which despite being rated 1 star we find the Vitality range is sadly the best they offer. The Buffet Kennel Mix, even in comparison to this, is appalling.

The first ingredient is Australian wholegrain cereals (including wheat, corn, rice and/or barley), and the second is Australian beef and lamb. We find many cheap brands of dog food conforming to this formula of grains then meat, whereas at the very least it should be the other way around (even better without the grains full stop). The reason we see this so often is because grains, particularly the likes of wheat/corn/rice, are very very cheap. Grains such as these cause many issues when fed to a dog over an extended period, but that’s irrelevant to a company such as this where it’s really just about profit.

Ingredients are listed in order of percentage, so we know for a fact there’s more grains than meat. Even so, meat is weighed prior to cooking and usually contains approximately 70% water. It’s possible a product such as this is 80% grains, perhaps more. The meat won’t be very significant.

Animal fats are included, as is a vitamin pack as per industry requirements to label this as a “balanced diet”. Given the poor quality of the main ingredients I feel certain this won’t be a quality inclusion either.

I wouldn’t feed this to my dogs. Ever. I wouldn’t feed their cat food to my cat either. Ever. It’s low in protein (not good), low in fat (not good), and high in carbs (definitely not good).
