Hills Ideal Balance

Hills Ideal Balance

Most of the products on offer from Hills are terrible (namely Science Diet and Prescription Diet). Thankfully they clean it up a bit with Ideal Balance.

This review is for the Chicken & Brown Rice recipe, but all products in the range are similar. They also offer a grain free range.

Chicken is the main ingredient, which is what our furry friends love, and what Hills want us to believe is the main ingredient. It’s a bit misleading, as chicken has a high water content which dissipates during the cooking process. This makes the meat content less significant than we’re led to believe. Realistically the protein in the food will come from the Yellow Peas and Pea Protein Concentrate we also find in the top five ingredients. Cats find meat protein far easier to digest than peas, so keep that in mind.

Brown Rice is one of the better choices of grain, so that’s good to see, but it will make up the majority of the food. We also find brewers rice in the top ingredients which is nothing short of rubbish.

There are some decent inclusions in the food – flaxseed and fish oil as a source of omega fatty acids, egg (albeit egg product) as a decent source of protein, and a range of fruits, vitamins, and minerals.

It reads like a plant-based kibble to me, and I’d prefer to see better meat ingredients for our carnivorous cats. I’ll give it a dubious 3 stars as the overall ingredients are of better quality than most readily available foods.

If this has helped you please take the time to share it to other Australian pet owners. Thank you 🙂

Good points…

Decent quality ingredients are used (except brewers rice).

Bad points…

Cats need meat, and this food seems to be lacking in what matters most.
