Earthborn Holistic Cat Food Review

05/05/2022 – Consider this a cautionary alert. Earthborn issued a voluntary recall in 2021 which was investigated by the FDA. The FDA has now terminated the recall alert, but a list of recalled batches can be found here.

The recall is in relation to elevated levels of aflatoxin, with a particular reference to corn.

More information from the FDA can be found on the alert here and the investigation here.

When you take your car for a service you might see the wording “Approved Auto Mechanic” above the door. The word “Approved” makes it sound reputable, but it’s just a marketing word. Approved by whom?

Earthborn Holistic Cat Food Review

Much is the case with the term “Holistic” in the pet food industry. It suggests the food is natural and balanced, but it’s still just a marketing word. Fortunately for Earthborn their pet foods are better than most, but is it deserving of the word “holistic”?

Let’s find out…

The main ingredient is Chicken Meal, which is a great lean meat and packed with protein in it’s meal form. The second ingredient, however, is Pea Protein, and it’s a shame to see it so significant. The 4th ingredient is also Peas, so what they’ve done is split the pea ingredients to make them look less significant. It’s possible peas outweigh the meat content.

To switch back to a positive tune, there’s a number of named fish meals in the food which is great to see, inclusive of herring meal, salmon meal, and whitefish meal. It’s great to see flaxseed as well.

There’s a selection of fruits and veggies near the bottom of the ingredients list, but it’s debatable what benefit they may have.

The food boasts very high protein, high fat, and low carbs. This is a definite plus, but we need to be aware peas will be a significant part of this. It’s one of the better cat foods on our shelves, but there are better.
